Last Night, Big BenUnion Jack Dan and I went to see Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. I thought that the trailer was hilarious and it turns out that the trailer was very misleading in a good way. This movie was not a comedy. It's definitely pitched that way and there are many funny moments (most in the trailer) but this movie is a fairly heavy drama.

The movie is uneven. The first part of the movie feels like it's having an identity crisis. Is this a comedy or a drama? it doesn't do well when it tries to straddle both. Also the comedy, although funny, makes it hard to get a gauge on the characters. The first third just feels off.

Stick with it though. The movie gets better and I found myself growing very attached to the main characters. In particular, Steve Carell is very well cast in the part of Dodge. I left the theater with a very melancholy, clingy feeling. It fills your head with a lot of "what if" scenarios.

I know that this movie did pathetically bad in the weekend box-office and I'm not surprised. I think that it should have shot lower in scope, like maybe less marketing and just hitting art house theaters. It's not at all a typical summer movie and unfortunately, it was released at the wrong time and in the wrong way. It's worth seeing and one that will get lost in the shuffle.

Gotta love a movie that has the world's cutest dog and prominently features Smart Cars!
