Tobbes Kok or in English, "Toby's Kitchen" was my first experience at a Swedish restaurant.  Meatballs at the Ikea cafe in Burbank, doesn't count.

The first thing that I have to point out is the light in the picture above. It was about eight pm and the light didn't get much darker over the course of the night. This played havoc on my body, but having just gotten off of our international flight, it made it a lot easier to stay awake during our meal. It was exhausted! We were not in Sweden long enough for me to get used to these perpetually light nights. I can't imagine the opposite, when in winter, the days stay mostly dark. 

Tobbes Kok is a small restaurant located in an area called Bromma, a suburb of Stockholm, where my step-kids live with their mother. They picked us up from the airport and we had a family meal at Tobbes Kok, just a short walk from their house in a beautiful master-planned community.

The kids love eating at Tobbes Kok, because it has awesome pancakes and a playground. Never underestimate the power of a good playground. It was very busy on the night that we visited, but luckily we were able to snag the last table on the patio, where we could watch the kids playing.

This was my first experience ordering from a menu that was not in English. Intimidating. It was actually the only place that we visited in Sweden, that did not have an English translation on the menu. As far as the areas that we visited, practically everyone spoke English perfectly and we had no problems figuring out directions or transportation. Most of the people were friendly and happy to help out foreigners. 

Luckily, Dan's ex-wife ( who I met for the first time and liked very much), sat next to me and patiently explained everything on the menu. Thankfully, she also did all of the ordering for us. I had a delicious goat cheese and beet appetizer and a fish stew for my main. Dan had prawns on toast. We enjoyed several bottles of wine over a leisurely summer meal, celebrating the start of our vacation!

It's probably a bit off-the-beaten-path for most tourists, but Tobbes Kok is worth the effort. Excellent meal in a pretty location!
