SoCal Smarties Meet- The British are Coming

Last Sunday, Dan and I experienced our first time organizing a meet-up for the SoCal Smarties. It was hard work! Rewarding, but stressful.

Dan's parents have owned two Smarts, including the first right-hand drive in Europe bought in 2002. The experience that they have had owning Smarts is a big part of the reason that we decided to try the brand. When we found out that they would be visiting us, we wanted to make sure that they could attend a meet-up and see our local Smart Car club.

We themed it to Dan's parents and used the event name, The British are Coming, which was thought up by Patti, one of the group leaders. Patti and Bob were a huge help guiding us through our first time as organizers. Thanks!

We asked Dan's parents to bring over Cadbury Chocolate, which is different from the American Cadbury Chocolate. The American version has wax in it to keep it from melting. The British version is creamy and delicious.

The night before the meet, I baked several batches of fruit scones from a recipe in Jaime Oliver's Jaime's Food Revolution cookbook. The scones were a bit of a gamble. I'd never made them before and I even tweaked some of the instructions. However, they turned out fabulous! I highly recommend this cookbook as all of the recipes as that I've tried are easy and they have turned out great. The morning of the meet, Dan and his mother made a bowl of fresh cream to pile on the scones. They seemed to be a big hit.

At ten am, we met the rest of the group in the parking lot of the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railway Museum. We spent about an hour conversing and eating the treats that we brought. It's always fun to see all of the different Smart cars. There is a lot of creativity and modifications with the cars in our group.

The LA Live Steamers is a non-profit organization that is open to the public on Sundays for rides on their 7 1/2 gauge model trains. This had nothing to do with our British theming, but we thought that it would be a fun activity for the group.

Our group was spread across the first three train rides of the day.

The owner of the train that Dan rode kindly let us attach a Go-Pro camera to the front of the train. You can see how long the track is from the footage. It's a great deal for a three dollar donation.

After riding the train, we headed over to the Walt Disney Barn, which is only open on the third Sunday of every month. The Disney Barn is an amazing place for both train and Disney fans. For Disney fans, they have big name guest stopping by the barn every month. I can't reveal who will be there, but there will be a big  celebrity stopping by the barn in March. The "who" will be announced on their website in a few weeks, keep an eye out!

At noon, we embarked on our scenic drive through Griffith Park and Hollywood. Dan led a nearly hour long drive and we had many pedestrians pull out their cell phones to take pictures of our convoy. We had lots of smiles, waves and looks of disbelief as we drove towards the English Pub for lunch.

Lunch was at the Robin Hood British Pub in Sherman Oaks.

The weekend before the meet, Dan and I had lunch at the pub and spoke with the event coordinator, Jerry, about reserving a space for our large group. Jerry and the staff at Robin Hood were excellent with our group. They joined together a huge table in the dining room and even created individual checks. It was a lot of work, but our server was friendly and competent. I would not hesitate to recommend the Robin Hood British Pub for large group functions.

We enjoyed watching Dan's parents interact with the group, especially their giving advice on British menu items. Everyone was a good sport for coming out and trying new things. I took a few pictures of the Smarts in the pub parking lot.

2013 Wrap-Up

2013 has been a year of several monumental life-altering events.

I come from a very small family. This year, both my aunt and uncle passed away, leaving me as the final member in our family. Sure, I have some distant cousins somewhere (Iowa, Utah?), but I've never met them. It has hard enough when my uncle died in April, but I never could have imagined that last week, my aunt would join him.

I'm still more stunned than sad, although I'm sure that emotion will take over in the new year. I miss them, but I'm relieved that they are no longer physically suffering. In particular, I know that it was very hard on my aunt when my uncle passed. Her grief was overwhelming.

In addition to the loss of my family, I'm also transitioning out of a caregiver role. I've spent the last several years helping my aunt and uncle, often spending several days at a time living with them. I accompanied them to doctors appointments, helped around the house, cooked, gardened and ran errands. It's strange to go from being so needed to nothing. 2014 will be spent closing out their estate and getting their home ready to be sold. It's going to be a big task, but I feel like it will help with the grieving process.

Even with the loss of my aunt and uncle, 2013 wasn't a bad year.

Dan and I got engaged at Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) and we married a few months later at the Aria in Las Vegas. It couldn't have been more perfect and the joy has spilled over, making the most difficult days of 2013, a lot easier to bear. Dan has been my rock. In many ways, this has been the happiest year of my life. I feel blessed to be part of Dan's wonderful family, which include his two adorable children.

I traveled more in 2013, than in any previous year. We spent two weekends in Las Vegas, one weekend in Big Bear and three nights in Portland, adding Oregon to list of states I've visited.

This year marked my first trip to Europe. We actually visited the United Kingdom twice, spending a total of seventy-six days and visiting three countries. On our second trip, we did a 3300 mile drive around England, Scotland and Wales.

The United Kingdom is beautiful and diverse. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to explore so much of it and yet, I'm also left wanting more! Contrary to what some may think, it is not a small island!

I read 55 books in 2013. More than last year, but less than in previous years. I've found that I read more when I'm happy. While we were in Europe, I plowed through books. When I was dealing with family health issues and death, I barely read a chapter. Trashy television is more my speed when I'm stressed.

I started a new part-time job at the end of 2013. I'm now a professional dog-walker. Don't tell my cats. It's a good fit. I love being outdoors and with animals. Starting in January, I will have several clients on a regular basis, including the most adorable golden retriever puppy in the world.

As usual, we went to tons of movies and events throughout the year. My favorite event was seeing Josh Ritter perform in Hollywood. It was magical. We are going to another Josh Ritter concert in January and I can't wait!

We attended our first NASCAR Race, which was hot, loud and a lot more fun that I ever would have anticipated.

We went on more outings with the SoCal Smarties, our local Smart Car club, including a memorable visit to the Battleship Iowa. We even leased the first Electric Drive Smart Car in California.

I learned that Zip-lining and Segway tours are more adventure than I can handle. Both were more terrifying than thrilling.

In 2013, we went through paperwork hell to refinance our house and in the end, it was all worth it. I'm far better off financially than I was this time last year.

My health and weight are about the same. We did a few solid months of exercise, including waking up before sunrise to go on long walks. It didn't stick or become a lasting routine, but I'm hopeful that things will change in 2014.

We did several home improvement projects in 2013, including new wood floors for our stairs and bedroom. Our house has really taken shape and it looks nothing like it did when I inherited it from my mom back in 2008. I can hardly believe this is my childhood home.

2013 was a year of highs and lows. I spent most of it feeling unstable and unsteady emotionally. Again, it wasn't a bad or unhappy year overall, but I'm looking forward to 2014 being more peaceful and calm.

SoCal Smarties VIP Launch Brunch

Yesterday, Dan and I headed to Santa Monica to check out the new 100% electric Smart Cars. The event had been going on for a week, but Sunday afternoon our club, the SoCal Smarties, was treated to a private event with a brunch following the test drives.

Dan and I arrived early and after waving hi to a passing convoy of Smarts, we realized that Dan had forgotten his wallet at home. Doh! He needed his drivers license for the test drive, so we headed back to Glendale. We managed to only be about forty-five minutes late to the event, which was apparently a good move, as we were told that the line for the test drives had been very long at the start of the event.

Valet parking was free for our group and I'm sure that the valets at Santa Monica Place felt like they were being invaded by Smarts. They were everywhere.

Our Smart driven by the valet. Freddy was all pretty from his bath at Mercedes Laguna Nigel, so we brought him out today. I think this may have been his first SoCal Smarties event..Dan's car is usually cleaner!

The test drive wait was about twenty minutes. As soon as we got in line, a girl came up to us to offer us tea or lemonade. A different attendant approached with an Ipad to register us for the test drive. The registration also entered us in a drawing to win an Electric Smart lease.

Dan went on his test drive first. He has been wanting an electric car and was very excited for the test drive.

A happy Dan test driving the Electric Smart.

I, on the other hand, am a nervous wreck driving in Santa Monica, especially with all of the construction and weekend crowds. I didn't want the added pressure of driving a car that wasn't mine with a stranger in the passenger seat. So, I asked to go on the test drive as a passenger, rather than driving it myself. I was paired with Aaron, who took me around the block and explained the features.

Returning from my ride with Aaron.

I liked it! I don't do well with change, but the basics look a lot like my current Smart. I liked the added power, as Aaron demonstrated with an acceleration punch. It's zippy! I loved how it is so completely quiet. The surround sound is great too.

After the test drive, we headed up stairs to the Smart Pop-Up Shop. Thanks to early seasons of The Apprentice, I'm familiar with the term Pop-Up Shop!

On entering the event, we were greeted with a glass of champagne and our hands were stamped to indicate that we were drinking = no more test drives.

In addition to the champagne, we were treated to a wonderful buffet, a coffee bar, cocktails and a cute cake in the shape of a Smart Car. I was told that at an earlier event (which out group was invited, but we couldn't make it) they had a sushi spread in the shape of a Smart Car!

We mingled with friends from our group and checked out the Smarts that they had in the room. Dan ditched me for awhile to talk to one of the reps ( a nice guy who looked like he could be Bradley Cooper's twin) and got more info on the electrics. Good thing I was holding his wallet, because I thought Dan might make a very expensive impulse purchase!

We have been on many meet-ups since first buying our Smarts a year ago. As always, the best part of the meets is catching up with the friends that we have made in the group. This event in particular, was great for mingling and even though I didn't have a chance to talk to everyone, I had some great conversations yesterday. In particular, I'd like to mention Ron, who is always so nice and has kind words for my blog.  Thanks for reading Ron!

We've been spoiled with free-stuff from the last couple of meets. This time Smart USA put together a great gift bag, that included a big coffee table art book and a cute espresso cup and saucer.

We walked out of the event and headed to third street for lunch. During lunch, we discussed getting an Electric Smart and the discussion turned into a decision to swing by Mercedes Beverly Hills on the way home.

At Mercedes, we spoke with Adrian (who was an early member of the SoCal Smarties) and within half an hour, we put our name down on an Electric Smart that is currently sitting in a Los Angeles port.. This time next week, we may have a new Electric Smart!

It would be a glass top in this gun metal grey matte color.

Dan sitting in the car in the dealership..our electric would be this color with a glass roof.

We are excited over it, but still crunching numbers and working on the logistics. With all of the incentives and rebates, it looks like the lease on the electric would be less than on our current convertible. The City of Glendale would fit a converter into our garage for free and hopefully will be coming out to our house this week to take a look at our garage. We found out the DWP will even give us a bit back on our electricity bill.

The idea is it will be Dan's car for commuting to work and he will be able to charge it while at the office. We will still have my Smart for the longer trips. So far, it sounds like a good deal and the electric is a fun car.

Stay tuned to see if we end up going for it!
