I'm going to be in hot water for this post. I'm never going to hear the end of it from Dan and he may even be compelled to create his own WordPress account so that he can chime in. I am proceeding with reckless abandon with the topic of Crumpets and English Muffins. This morning, Dan made me a Warburton's Crumpet with melted butter for breakfast.

Warm, buttery and delicious. I immediately compared it to an English Muffin and Dan informed me that it was NOTHING like an English Muffin. ( As I am writing this post, I have the feeling that I will be sleeping on the couch tonight!). I'm not sure if all crumpets are like the Warburtons brand, but what I ate was definitely a first cousin to the Thomas English Muffin. Sure, it was thicker and more doughy, but it had the yummy nooks and crannies where the butter pools. Had I not been told I was eating a crumpet, I would have called it an English Muffin. The similarities trump the differences. These two are related!!!

I am told that our very popular Thomas' English Muffins are not available in England. However, I looked up the company and the founder and creator of the muffins, Samuel Bath Thomas, emigrated from England to the US and started his company. So maybe his English Muffins are his version of a Crumpet and his version just took off in popularity in America? Also, maybe since Thomas' are so popular, in American culture we are appropriated the term English Muffin to mean anything similar. Like we say Xerox, when we mean photocopy or Kleenex, when we mean tissue.

Bottom line- Crumpets and English Muffins are both delicious, so it seems to be a silly debate!
